Morrie's Wisdom

Choose a quote that speaks to you from what we have read so far. Write the quote at the top of your response to this post and then write your reaction to that quote -or- find someone who wrote about the same quote as you and respond to that person's post.

Example:
"The culture we live in does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn' t work, don't buy it" (Albom, 42).

In the U.S. today, if a person does not live up to the values promoted by the media (being beautiful, thin, rich, athletic...etc) they feel inadequate, or feel that they don' t measure up. I like this quote because Morrie tells us to ignore the culture and create our own "subculture" by filling our lives with more meaningful pursuits.

"Aging is not just decay you know, its growth."
This is a great quote. It tells me to stay positive about everyday that i live, to look forward on whats to come. I might be getting weaker and less energetic every moment and hour of my life, but i know that my soul and thoughts are growing stronger with every minute I experiance.

"Aging is not just dacay you know. It's growth".
When you age you got weaker and slower It becomes harder to do normal things, but its not always bad.For example you could meet new people, also you could try new things that maybe were not around when you where young.

-"shouldn't the world stop? don't they know what has happened to me?"

-i think that whenever something bad happens to a person they look for sympathy from others and they expect everyone to drop what they're doing and give them attention. thats just how people work. they want sympathy so they won't feel like they're all alone.

"Aging is not just a decay you know. It's growth...." (Pg. 118)

I chose to use this quote because i think as i grow i become more knowlegable in what is going on in my life and how the world is. Some people want to stay young forever and think youthism is the best thing in the world. They don't want to take control of their own lives or accept things that are going on in their lives. Looks are also a key point. -Sandra Hansen

"if you hold back emotions-if you don't allow yourself to get all the way throught them- you can never get to being detatched from them."

i choose this quote because it relates alot to my childhood. i didn't cry for three years and i never felt any emotion till my parents split up then i started to feel every little thing and i started to tell people how i felt.

"love wins, love always wins."

i feel that no matter what choices you make, you will always end up doing something you love. like when hanging out with friends, if your doing something that you don't like, you will probly start doing something else that you like better. or when it comes to picking a boyfriend. you like one but love the other. you want to be with both of them but theres one you want to be with more.. in the end you will always chose one that you love..

"People haven't found the meaning in their lives, so they're running all the time looking for it. They think the next car, the next house, the next job. then they find that those things are empty too, and they keep running.
pg. 136

this quote was interesting because he had a totally different look at life. he wanted to tell Albom that he should stop running and find the meaning of his life and stop wasting it on the next item that he wants.

"The most inmportant thing in life is to learn how to give out love and to let it come in."

This is very true. In life you not only need to learn how to love others but to let others love you, because if you spend your whole life giving out love but not letting any come in, you will get worn out. The other way is bad as well, if you never give out any love you wont have a very happy life either. I think this is somthing everyone needs to work on harder, I also think it is an important part of life thata lot of people don't think about enough.

"so many people walk around with a meaningless life. they seem half asleep even when they're busy doing something they think is important.this is because they are chasing the wrong things."

i think that this quote is a nice quote. it quotes verry nicely. it has a nice quotelike feel to it. i think its true. people do stuff that they feel they have to, to succeed in life. but they hate it. people hate their jobs. they work like zombies even in executive possitions and stuff high up. we are ignoring what we really want to do and do what society tells us is an important and respectable job or thing to do.

"so many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half asleep even when they're busy doing something the think is important. This is because they are chasing the wrong things." I agree with this quote because so many people in this world chase materialistic things because they think they are important. They spend time trying to find a good job so they can support themself and have money. We need to chase after things that will truly benefit our lives such as true love and family. Money will give us happiness for short times, but true love can make us joyful for our intire lives.

The quote i chose was...

" A tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band. And most of us live somewhere in the middle."

I feel very strongly about this quote because it really relates to me. To me it means being pulled in two different directions, for me it would be wrong and right. One second it pulls me one way, another second it pulls me the other way. Another reason i chose this quote is because we have to deal with this everyday in highschool, always having to choose the right decisions...or the wrong ones.

The quote I found was "Learn to die, you learn to live." This means to mean me that when you finally learn that you shouldn't be afriad to die because then you will be afriad to live. Why waste you time worrying about death when you could be living a wonderful life. Don't let you life pass you up while you are worrying about death.

p.118 "Aging is not decay, you know. It's growth."

I think people misinterpret what growth is. People forget that as you get older, from all past experiences, you actually learn a lot and you become wise. Many people look at aging as a form of "no longer capable of doing things, getting weak, sick, tired." Well of course it's true, most can't do those things as they age, but then people don't always realize that those before us have grown to know so much about life because they've experiened it before we had. They know what it's like to be a teenager, they know what's lost and what's love. If you know that someone can live to sixty to understand so much about life then think about the ones that will live up to an extra ten years to know more! It's growth. always learning, always living. I think it's really important to look at it this way so we can live a healty and happy life. That's what we need to understand when we think of aging.

The quote I chose was..

"The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love and to let it come in."

I believe this quote has many meanings, and I also believe it could relate to everyones life. I believe it relates to my life in ways such as learning how to love because you never know when someone you love, could slip away. Also, I believe if new love approaches, such as a new friend, we should take anvantage of that, and realize the blessing that was just given to us. There is no other thing like love anywhere out there, so why give it away when it's right under your nose. When we have someone close to us, we should always remind them that we do love them, so if by chance they do slip away, you will always have that reassurance that they know you do love them. Love always finds its way, and love always wins.

"...the biggest defect we human beings have is our shortsightedness. We should be looking at our potential, stretching outselves into everything we can become..."

I think this quote if very true. Most people don't truly understand how great they can be or howmuch they can accomplish. People all just want to do the bare minimum because they are too lazy. I think people need to focus more on what they can become, and not what they do and don't want to do.

"If you really listen to that bird on your shoulder, if you accept that you can die at time then you might not be as anbitious as you are."
when you can accept death then your ready to start liveing yourlife. evrey one is going to die some day so live your life when you can.

"the only rational act is love"

That is one of the stupidest nuggets of wisdom that I have heard in a while. There are plenty of rational acts besides love. Like, say... oh, I dunno, breathing. Getting up in the morning is a rational act. But I think we have to define rational first.

dictionary.com says
Rational is an adjective. Has several definitions:
(1) characterizing behavior that purposefully chooses means to achieve ends

So if he is talking in a broad and philosophical manner as morrie usually does he probably means the end of life... maybe. Or perhaps he was just out of his mind on morphine to kill the pain of ALS. But if he says that love is the only behavior that purposefully chooses means to achieve ends he is missing a lot of stuff. Like walking and getting up in the morning and communicating and living and a whole bunch of other slightly important stuff. So my theory is that morrie doesn't actually listen to what he says, or perhaps he is just in love with the sound of his own voice. But he just prattles on about whatever and then says it in a deep thoughtfull way to make it seem meaningful. That quote only makes sense if you're meditating on top of mount suribachi while eating only one grain of rice a day and meditating.

"the most important thingin life is tolearn how to give out love and let it come in"

I agree with this saying, if you cant give and recieve love then you cant have any relationships...or atleast meaningfull ones. its hard at first, but once you get used to it, you become a better friend and person. the love that you give is always equal to the love that you recieve

Anonymous said...

"Love wins. Love always wins."

I chose this quote by Morrie, because I feel like I can relate to it. I have had some rough times in my life, and things have gotten a lot better since then. There are tons of infulential people in our lives that love us, and there are some that do not. Either way, love wins in the end, one way or another.

"Do I wither up and disappear, or do I make the best of my time left"

I like this quote because it shows how much of a positive out look on life Morrie had. He's right when he says that he shouldn't just wither away and die he should live what little time he has left to the fullest.

Sometimes what you see is not what you want. What you don't want-happens. But you got to believe that there is going to be a better day..oneday.

Quote:
"Mitch, if you're trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. And if you're trying to show off for the people at the bottom, forget." (last page in book)

I respect what this qoute says because it means a variety of different things i strongly believe in and respect. I think what morrie is trying to say is that status will get you nowhere in life. Living for yourself and not trying to be what other people want you to be is important. Showing off for people at the top is a waste of time because they will look down at you anyhow. Showing off for people at the bottom is a waste of time too because those people will then envy you. Overall, trying to impress others shouldn't be people's main focus in life. Nobody wants to be held back from showing the world who they are and people should expose what they have to offer throughout life. Life is about making discoveries and finding yourself and by simply having a good status will get you nowhere.

if youve found meaning in your life you don't want to go back. You want to move forward.

i love this quote because it expresses happiness!! i love happiness!! its like if you and your boyfriend just broke up and you feel like it's the end of the world. but this quote is saying look for happiness and then you wont want to dwell on the past you want to keep moving forward!!

"if you've found meaning in your life you don't want to go back, you want to move forward."

This quote means a lot to me, it sybolizes that if you have found meaning or something that means a lot to you then you don't want or have the need to go back in your life. You have come to realize that everyone makes mistakes and they are normal. If you have found something that really means a lot to you though, you have no need to go back you just have the power to move on and go forward.

" What will you do without your Mother."

I wouldn't know what I would do without my Mother. I would think of how good she had taught me respect and how I should follow my dreams and no matter what does go wrong that I should always stay strong. Just let things take me where they take me.

"Whats wrong with being number 2?"

This quote says alot about our culture today. Most everything we do is out of competitiveness. People want to beat other people, most of the time not in a violent way, but alot of the time becuase they want to be on top. Media has put out the idea that you have to step on other faces to get where you "want to be" in life. I am not saying that I dont do this myself, it is something I have to work on.

"Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

I completely agree with this quote because you should do something in your life thay you love and you should be able to help others around you while doing it. Going through life knowing that you hate your life isnt a good way to live it. You shouldn't be worrying about material things or things that dont matter you should be worrying about things you cant live without or things you actually care about.
